Private Hugh McCahon
Hugh McCahon was born on 24 August 1893 at Moneyleck, Ballymoney, County Antrim, the first of five children of farmer Joseph McCahon (or McCaughern) and his wife Hannah (née Wilson). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Moneyleck with his parents and siblings.
McCahon enlisted in the North Irish Horse in February or March 1917 (regimental number not known at present). He trained at the regimental reserve camp at Antrim before being transferred to the 1/1 Regiment, Northumberland Hussars (Corps of Hussars No.73891). Records suggest that this took place in early June 1918.
It appears that he did not see overseas service prior to the end of the war on 11 November 1918.
In October 1921 McCahon emigrated to New Zealand, finding work there as a miner. On 14 April 1925 he married Scottish-born Lucinda Leyden in Waimangaroa. He died on 22 May 1975 and was buried in the Old Levin Cemetery, Palmerston North, Manawatu-Wanganui.
